OpenAI to Add Parental Controls to ChatGPT as Part of New Safety Measures

American AI company OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it will introduce new safety features, including parental controls, to its chatbot ChatGPT. The update comes a week after a U.S. couple alleged that the system encouraged their teenage son to take his own life.

According to OpenAI’s blog post, “Within the next month, parents will be able to link their accounts with their teen’s accounts and set age-appropriate behavior rules to control how ChatGPT responds.”

The company added that parents would also receive alerts whenever ChatGPT detects that a teenager may be in “a moment of acute distress.” These safety features are part of OpenAI’s wider initiative to ensure AI tools remain safe for younger users.

Matthew and Maria Raine, who filed a lawsuit in California last week, claimed that ChatGPT developed a close relationship with their son “Adam” before he tragically took his own life. The lawsuit alleges that in his final chat on April 11, 2025, ChatGPT not only assisted the teen in stealing alcohol from his parents but also analyzed a noose he tied, confirming it could potentially hold a human. Hours later, Adam was found dead.

Legal representatives from The Tech Justice Law Project argue that ChatGPT’s design encouraged users to treat the chatbot like a trusted friend, therapist, or advisor — making teens particularly vulnerable.

Critics have also described OpenAI’s announcement of parental controls as vague and “the bare minimum,” raising doubts about how effective these safety measures will truly be.

Despite concerns, OpenAI insists it is working on stronger safety features to reduce risks. Over the next three months, the company plans to enhance ChatGPT by redirecting sensitive conversations to reasoning models, which are better at following safety guidelines.
