Google Launches New Windows Desktop App with Spotlight-Like Search Tool
On Tuesday, Google rolled out a powerful Windows desktop app aimed at helping users find information at lightning speed. This experimental application is designed to make searching seamless by allowing users to press Alt + Space and instantly look through local PC files, installed applications, Google Drive documents, and web results.
The search tool mirrors Apple’s Spotlight feature but brings Google’s search intelligence to Windows, offering faster and more accurate results across different sources. As part of Search Labs, the app is still in its experimental phase, allowing users to test, explore, and provide feedback before a wider release.
Equipped with Google Lens, the app lets users interact directly with on-screen content. This means selecting any image or text to translate, scan, or analyze. Whether it’s solving math homework, identifying visuals, or translating languages, the feature makes the Windows desktop app a multipurpose tool.
Beyond its search bar, the app includes AI Mode, which delivers advanced responses to complex, multi-step queries using Google’s AI-driven search. Users can navigate between different categories like AI responses, images, videos, shopping, and more. For personalization, a dark mode option is also available.
Currently available in English and limited to U.S.-based users, the app requires a PC running Windows 10 or later. With its combination of Spotlight-style searching, AI integration, and Lens-powered screen analysis, Google’s new Windows desktop app is set to change how people interact with search on their PCs.
